Gratitude

Affirmation: “Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened.  Happiness never decreases by being shared."   Buddha

How can we move on if we are not grateful for what we already have?  Everyone should be able to find on thing in which they are grateful for in life.

Gratitude is an important thing that is so easy to forget because a lot of times we get so caught up with daily obligations and relationships in life that we tend to forget the things we treasure the most.

Think of the person that goes on vacation they come back and what do they talk about...you will hear some of them say it was nice to get away from the television, the phone or computer (but with technical being important means of communication now this is becoming less popular with the invention of the beloved blackberry).

It is nice to just appreciate the sunrise or sunset, smell of nature, and laughter of children.  Appreciation is easier to remember when we get away from daily responsibilities of life.

Why is it easier to be grateful when we are caught off guard by unfamiliar surroundings?  Take a beach for example you may be able to enjoy the sunset or sunrise there much more then from our own yard due to the fact we may need to do weeding or yard work.

Gratitude takes away the negative thoughts that may creep in your mind and replaces it with the positive.  When I get caught up in small thinking and and obligations I take a deep breath and say "Thank you for all the things I have been given."  I make a mental list in my head of all the things that make me grateful.  Today, I am thankful for the following:

  • My parents - They have been married for the past 45 years today.
  • My father - (I know I said parents but allow me to explain)  he has been in the hospital since October 6, 2009 he got out of the hospital today!  He has taught me how to provide and be content with what I have because one never knows what may happen from on minute to the next.
  • My mother - she never gave up on my father, us children (it was three of us, but my brother died 6 years ago).  My mother has taught me strength and to always be there for my family no matter what.  There was times I thought she was reaching a bottom but she faced all the obstacles in her life with faith, hope, love and courage.
  • My granny who is going 92 in October I can't imagine life without her.  She always inspires me and is there when ever I need to talk.  I thank God that I was blessed with her.  She is my one and only grandparent and has acted as a guide to me teaching me how to cook; natural ways to take care of ones self and about what a little faith can do.
  • My kids they are my light that shines even when I may feel like giving up on myself some days they smile, laugh or say "Mama, not every day is going to be like this!"  (when this is said I know instantly I need to buck up and get it together little eyes are watching...what type of mom would I be to give up and not keep on going for them and more importantly myself...if I can't take care of me I can't take care of them)
  • Life in general I love life the ups and downs, ins and outs.  I am a strong believer that frame of mind means every thing.  Be positive, when negativity comes. I allow myself to think about it for about 20 minutes and get rid of it.  I accept the good with the bad but I do not live in the negative or regret.
  • The staff at KEMH I will never forget there constant around the clock care in ICU, Cooper and Perry Ward!
  • All my family and friends that are there for me no matter what I say or do they love me just the way I am faults and all.  Through them I have been taught acceptance and how care and love others.

Lastly, I am grateful that I am me...my life, my kids, my boyfriend of 5 years, the few true friends I have, the people I have encountered in my life, all the things I have learnt and the things I will soon have the opportunity to learn.
